ABOUT ME
This is John Hearne and you've found my web site. I have a variety of interests including firearms. I have been interested in firearms for a long time - I started reading Soldier of Fortune magazine in the fifth grade - and for several years I have been seriously studying the defensive use of firearms at schools such as GunSite and Front Sight.

Me and my patrol vehicle
This is me with a patrol vehicle when I still worked at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. This was also the view from my front door, not too shabby.

I have a pretty diverse employment history. I am currently a Park Ranger - Protection (translation: Law Enforcement Officer) with the National Park Service on the Natchez Trace Parkway. I worked intermittently with the Park Service in a law enforcement capacity for nine years and have recently converted to a full time position. I have also worked as a volunteer firefighter/EMT (since age 16), 911 Dispatcher, Computer/Network Support Technician, Secretary, Medical Assistant, and as a Laboratory Technician for a Reynolds Metals giving me a pretty eclectic background.

In addition to shooting, I also have a strong academic background in Criminal Justice and some of the research issues associated with this topic. My undergraduate background includes a B.A. Degree in Political Science, a B.S. in Criminal Justice, and a minor in History, all from North Carolina Wesleyan College. I also completed a Masters of Science Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1996. My Masters degree was in Criminology with a concentration in Research Methods. Part of my graduate program even included a class taught at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va which was a very unique experience. I have also published original research and have presented this research at a professional academic conference. My research interests include gun control, the death penalty, and the influence of the media on criminal justice issues. I hope to eventually provide access to my academic work since it would be useful to anyone doing research in this area, especially as a bibliography of significant works.
