I have not met anyone who did not enjoy shooting on steel targets. I've even heard some say that they actually shoot better on steel targets as opposed to paper or cardboard. The problem with steel targets isn't their fun factor or their training value but their cost. As best I can determine, there is no such thing as a cheap steel target. This is primarily a result of the materials used - specifically the use of armor grade steel.
I have shot on a variety of steel targets including the always popular pepper popper and the excellent targets from Mike Gibson Manuracturing (MGM). One benefit of shooting at Desert Sportman in Las Veags is that they have a nice variety of steel targets, in part because they host the SOF 3 Gun Match. Because of expense, I don't own any of these targets but have shot them quite a bit.
