| I have shot on a variety commercially available targets. The one that immediately comes to mind as worthless is the NRA B-27 target. This is the black silhouette target with oval scoring rings in the center of the target. The problem with this target is that the "X" ring is placed too low, encouraging you to place rounds in non-vital areas. This is especially crucial since many shooters will mash the trigger when under stress, driving the round's point of impact downward. If you practice on a B-27 and then mash the trigger, your rounds will likely strike the naval area. Without care, this would be a deadly wound but not for several days, leaving your opponent plenty of time to hurt you.
Another very popular target is the standard IPSC target. This target's "A" zone, the primary point of aim, is a long skinny rectangle. This shape is not anatomically correct and allows for the placement of rounds too low on the target. In its defense, the IPSC target does have a very nice representation of the occipital cavity.
