Unless you're shooting at an indoor range, you'll need some type of target stand to hold the target - I've tried using friends for this and quickly ran out of friends. When you're selecting a target stand, there is one important question you need to ask - What is the surface the stand will sit on? If the surface is soft - like dirt - then you have a lot of options since you can use stakes to secure the target. If you are shooting out West and everything is rock, you need a target stand that will stand independently and your choices are limited.
