| A shot timer is an incredibly valuable training tool. Its useful not just when your working on your live fire skills but it can also be useful in your dry practice sessions. In live fire, it will tell you important times to track your progress such as time for your draw stroke, time for reloads, and times for other manipulations. Actually, I use mine more in dry practice than live fire. I will set the "Par Time" for the length of time I want to perform a particular skill in and after generating a start signal, the timer will beep a second time to let you know that set time is over.
I bought this timer with an eye on value and I found the best value to be the Comepetition Edge Dynamics model CED 6000. The unit came with needed accessories like a padded carrying case and a small screwdriver for adjusting the sensitivity of the unit. This timer has useful functions like random start times so you can't anticpate the buzzer. The timer will also allow you to combine several times into one overall time. This is useful when running matches that have a stage composed several shooting strings. The timer also has a back-light option to allow you to see the timer without any external illumination should you wisely practice at night.
The timer also has some functions I've never used. For instance, the timer will also allow you to plug two stop plates into it and generate exact times for those engagments. The timer also has an output that could be used to activate turning targets and then return them to their hidden position after a certain time. This is actually useful, I just haven't had a turning target, yet.
I have been very happy with the performance and endurance of this timer. I have used it extensively in my practice sessions and have also used it when I've run stages for competitions. I've only replaced the battery once and that was after I left the timer turned on. Of all the "gadgets" I've bought over the years, this is probably the most valuable - I'd highly recommend it. I don't believe this timer is directly marketed by CED anymore but it can be purchased through Dillon for $129.
